How much does a small-business website cost in the UK?
Website costs vary widely because the requirements do. Here's what actually determines the cost of a small-business website, and where to find real starting points.
Ask ten web design studios “how much does a website cost?” and you’ll get ten different answers, because the honest answer always depends on what the website actually needs to do. A single-page site for a local tradesperson and a multi-page ecommerce store with product variants and payment integration are not the same project, and quoting a single figure for “a website” would hide more than it reveals. Here’s what actually drives the cost, so you can think about your own project more usefully than a generic number would let you.
What determines the cost
Number and type of pages. A landing page with one clear goal costs less to plan, write and build than a multi-page site with service pages, case studies, a blog and a careers section — each page type needs its own content, structure and design attention.
Content requirements. Whether you’re supplying finished copy and photography, or need help with messaging, copywriting and sourcing imagery, affects both timeline and cost.
Integrations and functionality. Booking systems, payment processing, membership areas, CRM connections and custom forms all add genuine value, but each one needs to be scoped and built properly rather than bolted on.
Ecommerce complexity. A simple product catalogue is a different project to a store with variants, stock management, shipping rules and multiple payment methods.
Design complexity. A site built from a flexible, reusable component system is a different scope to one with highly bespoke page layouts throughout.
Platform. WordPress vs a custom/static build is a genuine decision point — WordPress suits teams that want familiar day-to-day content control, while a modern static build can suit projects where performance and a lean front end matter more. We cover this trade-off on our websites page.
Real starting points, not a guess
Rather than quote a number here that would need endless caveats, we publish actual starting prices for common project types — a landing page, a multi-page website, and full ecommerce builds — on our pricing page. Those figures are a genuine starting point for the kind of project each package covers, with the final cost depending on the specifics above.
If you’re specifically looking for a website designer in York, our web design York page covers how we work with local businesses, alongside the same national pricing and process.
A quick way to scope your own project
Before you ask for a quote, it helps to have a rough view of:
- How many distinct page types you need (not necessarily how many pages — a blog template counts once)
- Whether you have existing copy and photography, or need help producing them
- Any systems you need the site to connect to (booking, CRM, payment, email marketing)
- Whether you expect to update the site yourself day-to-day, and how often
None of this needs to be precise — it just gives us a sensible starting point. From there, request a quotation and we’ll come back with a clear scope, a price based on your actual requirements, and the expected approach and timeline — not a number pulled from a generic range.
